In 1701, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, the future city of Detroit. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, it became an important industrial hub at the center of the Great Lakes region. The city's population became the 4th-largest in the nation in 1920, after only New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia, with the expansion of the auto industry in the early 20th century.
Detroit’s three major sports teams, the Tigers, Lions and Redwings all won championships and Detroit was known as the City of Champions. Detroit remains the only city to hold three of the four major sports championships at the same time.
Marvin Gay stepped in front of a mic at Hitsville U.S.A studios in Detroit and began to record “What’s Going On”, one of the most iconic albums of the 1970s and reigning as number one on the Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Hitsville U.S.A. was the nickname given to Motown Records first Detroit studio where greats such as Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, and the Jackson Five all recorded.
The group Kiss released a single called “Detroit Rock City”, and why not? From Bob Seger, to Kid Rock, MC5, The Romantics and even Eminem (a rapper not a rocker but too good to leave out), Detroit has been known to give as good as it gets when it comes to rock and roll.
"I love Detroit. Detroit fits me, that's the main thing I'm going to try to do, step in and embody the swag that people from Detroit walk with…… They have an underdog, go get- what-you-want feel to them and I like that about the city."
